EXPLORE RODA

May 23, 2023 Robert Jones

Roda was once a small fishing village which while keeping its authentic Greek character, has become a peaceful holiday resort with a beach of sand and pebbles.

Corfu is a very special part of Greece, being one of the few places in Europe where both European and Middle Eastern powers have ruled.  As a result, Corfu has its own character with an indefinable trait that makes it a truly unique part of the Mediterranean.   This greenest of Greek islands, much of Corfu's lush green landscape comes from its vast groves of olive trees.

There are lots of places to visit to suit everyone from sightseeing, boat trips or you could choose a relaxing and quiet holiday sunbathing on the beach or one of the nearby pool bars.

You can see the sights either by coach on an organised excursion or by hiring a car.  With our knowledge of the island, we can advise and help you choose the correct excursion that suits you.  If you hire a can then we can arrange for the car to be delivered either at the Kivotos Villa Studios to the airport.

Kite surf in Corfu

The kite-station and school of the Kite-Club-Korfu (KCK) is placed in the south-west of the island Corfu, in a region which is named "Chalikunas". The sandy beach, which is several kilometers long, and also the regularly appearing side-shore wind from north-west give us optimal conditions for teaching and kiting. Because of the smooth deeper becoming water we have a nice standing area near the coast, which makes the first flying exercises with the kite and the following tries of the waterstart a lot easier. Trekking in Corfu

The Corfu Trail. Since Corfu Trail was established in 2001, thousands of walkers have followed it the length of the island, 220 kilometres long, Corfu's long-distance walking route leads into a landscape untouched by the mass tourism that has scarred parts of the coastline, delving through the central countryside which visitors rarely discover and explore. Such is the variety of Corfu's scenery that walkers spend no more than an hour in any one landscape; indeed, around every corner a new scene stuns the eye. From the vast beaches and juniper dunes in the island's south, through the rolling olive groves of the central section, to the karst plateau and rugged gorges in the north, the Corfu Trail reveals an island paradise ideal for walkers. The North West coast of Corfu boasts an amazing variety of landscapes from the stunning blues and greens of Ákra Drástis in the west, to the long beach strip of Roda and Acharavi, to the bustling harbour at Kassiopi.

Take your choice - take a leisurely walk along little lanes strwn with meadow flowers, between the orange and lemon groves, or maybe along the promenade. Why not cycle to hidden coves, or take a drive along the coast to sample everything that Corfu has to offer.

From East to West you’ll find:

Kassiopi - A charming little fishing village with many bars, tavernas, restaurants with particularly fresh fish thanks to fishermen, gift shops, supermarkets and A.T.M. machines

Apraos Bay - A tiny resort amid groves of olive and orange trees.

Agios Spiridon Beach - A huddle of bars and shops off the beaten track.

Agía Ekateríni - A decayed monastary set in pleasant woodlands which can be cooling in Summer.

Acharavi and Roda - A long strip of beaches with shops, bars, restaurants and gift shops.

Angela Beach - Tucked away and almost forgotten, ideal for people who want to avoid the crowds.

Astrakeri is an oasis after a pleasant walk from Roda. Accessible via a maze of little lanes, it boasts three very fine fish restaurants.

Yiaolos Beach is a good place to stop, think and appreciate the beauty of the coastal scenery.

Sidari and Peroulades together form a bustling and busy resort with lots of bars and restaurants, and other services like minimarkets and cash points. Just a short walk further and you can explore the rare sandstone formations crumbling into the sea, known as the Canal d’Amour.

Cape of Drastis is for the more adventurous but well worth the trip to gaze into the astonishing blues and greens of its clear waters.

Away from the coast are a myriad of little lanes through which to wander each with their own curiosity and charm.

CORFU HISTORY

Corfu, known locally as Kerkyra is truly an island of enchantment.

The island is rich in history, but here’s a potted version as a primer. Do dig deeper, you’ll find it really rewarding.

Because of its enviable position and gentle climate, it has attracted the attention of settlers, traders and invaders through its history.

It’s well represented in ancient history, with references to great battles, one of which was the catalyst to the Pelopnnnesian War. In fifth century BC it was one of three great naval powers along with Athens and Corinth. You don’t need to travel far to find ruins of ancient Greek temples and other archeological sites.

Its strategic position invited invasions by the Ottomans and pirates in the Middle Ages, and prompted the building of formidable fortresses, two of which can still be found enclosing Corfu Town. Indeed it’s sometimes referred to as the Kastropolis - Castle City.

It became part of the republic of Venice in the 13th century just as this Italian city was opening up the world to trade.

In 1815, the British moved in following the Napoleonic Wars, and then in 1864 after the Treaty of London, it was ceded to Greece, along with the remaining islands of the United States of the Ionian Islands.

The Ionian Academy was the first university of modern Greece, with the Nobile Teatro di San Giacomo di Corfu the first Greek theatre and opera hous ein Modern Greece.

The first governor of an independent Greece after the revolution in 1921 - Ioannis Kopdistrias - was born in Corfu. The airport bears his name.

Corfu’s Old Town is a World Heritage Site.
